The evening also serves as a fundraiser for Hobbs Chamber Community Foundation. Breast cancer remains a significant health concern in Lea County, where women experience higher rates of late-stage diagnosis and mortality compared to both New Mexico and national benchmarks.
• More than 4 in 10 breast cancer cases diagnosed in Lea County are identified at a late stage 44.0%, compared to 31.4% statewide and 31% nationally.
• Additionally, among Hispanic women in Lea County, 47.2% of breast cancer cases were diagnosed at a late stage, compared to 37% statewide for Hispanic women.
• Breast cancer mortality rate: 82.4 deaths per 100,000 women in Lea County vs. 60.6 deaths per 100,000 women statewide.
• According to most recent data, Lea County has the highest breast cancer death rate in New Mexico, tied with Otero County.
