Nurses every day go above and beyond to not only provide patients and families with excellence in clinical care but also compassion. At The DAISY Foundation, we aim to honor them by showing our profound gratitude for all that they do.
The DAISY Award is a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers. It is run by our partners as a way to thank nurses for the care and kindness they provide.
What is the DAISY Foundation?
The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.
What is the DAISY Award?

Nor-Lea Hospital District DAISY Award Honorees
Quarters 2 and 3, 2024
Karen Carter, Operating Room Nominations: 2
“She was my mom's nurse for a routine surgery. She was so kind and really went the extra mile to ensure my mother's comfort, as well as my brother and I. She was sweet, personable, patient, and took her time in explaining every single thing that she was doing to and for my mother. My brother had questions, and she shared her knowledge so kindly and willingly. She kept us informed throughout the whole process. Even when I had to leave the hospital for a short time, she called and gave me updates. I felt comfortable leaving, because I knew my loved one was in good hands. She truly set an awesome example of just how impactful an awesome nurse can be, even during a routine procedure.”
Kellie Garner, Emergency Room Nominations: 9
“I went into ER for abdominal pain. I neglected to go in sooner because I avoid the doctor at all cost. When the nurse came in I was in excruciating pain, chills, and could hardly speak a full sentence. She let me know the timeline of things, how long I’d wait, and how long it would take for results or to get procedures done. Once I had meds in for pain and nausea, she got me warm blankets, covered me, took my sweater off, and got me comfortable so I could rest. Most nurses would’ve just handed the patient the blankets and pillow and not even helped the patient get comfortable. She was a very thorough nurse with her patient education & showed so much sympathy towards me. It makes a difference when you don’t want to go to the doctor and when you do go you have a great experience with a great nurse. Rather than having horrible experiences with horrible uncaring nurses. She immediately stood out as a good caring nurse and well above the normal nurse skills. You can teach a person to be a nurse but the sympathy, caring, and comforting nurse is something that one can’t teach. It’s unique and not everyone has it in them. Thank you for being so kind and a great nurse. I wish you well in all your future endeavors!”

“The nurse was very concerned for my well-being. She was always attentive and always wanting to make sure the doctor saw me and was always in the know. She was also very knowledgeable in all my questions. I believe she is what the DAISY award is all about. I believe she is a great nurse and any future patient of hers well be well taken care of. We need more nurses like this. If I was Nor-Lea I would say don't let this one go you would be foolish to let her go she is top notch!!!!”

Danelle Vickery, Emergency Department Nominations: 5
“She was wonderful to have as a nurse. Even though they were busy that day she made sure she checked on me frequently and explained my process of care. She never once made me feel less important or rushed. Her care was genuine, so many nurses lack this quality, and she was a refreshing piece of hope for our health care environment. Thank you for your care and making me feel important no matter how minor the situation! Keep shining bright and being amazing!”
